Creating a Master Bedroom Retreat...On a Budget!

The master bedroom is the only room in the house that we had to fully furnish once we moved in.  It is a room that had to be put together quickly and more importantly, on the cheap! So after much research on our dream master bedroom, we soon realized that it was not in our budget at the moment. So, it was decided that we will get pieces that we could replace in a couple of years once we are in a better position financially to purchase our dream master bedroom.

Come in, Ikea, more specifically, the Hemnes line at Ikea.  I was pleasantly surprised by this line of furniture. It's made out of solid pine and they look and feel of higher quality than what the price point leads you to believe.  Also known as my favorite kind of furniture!  We purchased a platform king size bed, 8-drawer dresser, and two 3-drawer dressers that we use as night stands all in black-brown color.

We decided to give this room some drama by painting the walls a dark gray from the Behr Marquee line, color 'Anonymous.'  You guys know from my previous posts that I am a huge fan of this line of paints from Home Depot.  We only had to do one coat as it comes with paint and primer in one!

Next up was styling the bed as it is where we will be spending most of our time.  We purchased a king size mattress from Tuft & Needle.  If you have not heard about this company and are in the market for a new mattress, I truly suggest you check out their website.  This is by far the best mattress both my husband and I have ever slept on.  We both are in love with this mattress, we seriously cannot say enough good things.  (I am not affiliated with Tuft & Needle, just truly love the mattress!)

We then dressed the bed with these amazing white sheets from Amazon and topped it with a white coverlet set from Joss & Main.  I kept both of these pieces neutral as I wanted to use the duvet cover to bring in color.  This allows me to change the duvet cover with the seasons and give the bedroom an inexpensive update whenever I want to spruce things up a bit.  I purchased the current duvet cover from Pottery Barn for $40 on sale! It was such a great price and I love the colors.  I then headed over to West Elm and purchased the two silk accent pillow covers for $10 each, also on sale!  Above the bed we hung a painting that we found at Target (I wasn't able to find the link online, if I do, I will update).

On both sides of the bed, we placed one 3-drawer dresser to use as night stands.  I love using dressers as night stands because it not only gives us much needed storage, but also gives us the height that I was looking for in a nightstand.  The lamps are also from Ikea.  Above each night stand, we placed silver mirrors from Kirklands.  I love how the mirrors bounce light throughout the room, especially when we have the electric fireplace and candles going.

Across the bed, we placed the 8-drawer dresser and above hung the TV on the wall.  Fresh flowers bring in such a warm, organic feel the space.  I love having flowers and plants in the bedroom.  On the right side of the room we hung an electric fireplace from and hung two picture ledges from Home Depot above.  Below the fireplace, I placed a chest from Joss & Main.  Gotta love the extra storage it provides!

On the left side of the room, we placed an off-white small round table from HomeGoods and on either side, two mustard yellow chairs from Target.    Above the round table, we hung three small paintings that we purchased at a gallery while walking around Fernandina Beach, Florida.

The first decorative piece that I purchased for this room was the curtains that I found at Kirklands.  I loved the colors and it helped me envision what I wanted to do with this rest of this room.

When I first started in this room, I thought that I was compromising delaying to create my dream bedroom.  But little did I know that I was creating my retreat.  I love spending time here and allowing myself to wind down and relax after a hard days work. Being new parents, my husband and I have spent many a nights watching movies and enjoying some "us" time in our retreat, that we created on a budget :)
