Creating a Stylish & Comfortable Family Room

Hello! Welcome to Dapper House Designs (now House by the Preserve, read all about it here) very first blog post. My name is Maria Lorena and I created this little blog to share our adventures in decorating our new build house and show how we've made it into our home. One of my main goals with this blog is to show you that creating a home takes time!

If you're fortunate enough to be able to furnish an entire home from day one, then I'd hate to say that this blog isn't for you.  If you are just starting out in your home ownership journey or are simply wanting to spruce up your rental on a budget, then you're in the right place!

I hope you join me in this adventure in decorating our homes and making them the best they can be. One room at a time!

You ready? Let's do this!

Welcome to our Family Room

Both my husband and I have furniture from our single days that we incorporated into our new home.  At first, I was a little hesitant as our styles are different. I have a more traditional style and he has more an industrial style, but we are determined to make it work as we just bought a house unfortunately and money tree didn't come with the house!

We decided to tackle the room that we'll be spending most of our time in first, the family room.  It's the heart of our home and we wanted to make sure it was comfortable and inviting for not only us, but also our friends and family.

The first thing in the room that had to go was the builder grade light fixture. I found this amazing ceiling fan on Amazon.com.  Having a ceiling fan is a must in Florida and I'm happy we're able to find a unique fan that doesn't make the room look dated.

We debated a lot on the wall color (my husband will tell you we painted 50+ samples, but it was only five!) and finally landed on a blueish grey.  We got the inspiration for this color from a painting I found while walking around Brunswick, Georgia. My love for Paris drew me to it and I just had to have it.  Little did I know that it would end up being the inspiration for our family room in our first home.

The color on the walls is by Behr, named is Skinny Jeans.  I highly recommend getting Behr paints under their Behr Marquee brand.  It's a paint and primer in one and it we only needed one coat!  It goes on easy and made painting the tall walls a breeze.  Anything that helps me do less work is great in my book!

One of the few pieces of furniture that we did purchase was the sectional sofa. We had a couch but it was too small for the space and we really wanted a couch in which both my husband and I could lounge on. After many months of searching we finally landed on this sectional from Ashley Furniture.  We couldn't be happier with this choice!   Many a naps have been taken on this couch and I am sure there will be many many more to come!

The focal point of the room is my husband's pride and joy, his 70 inch flat screen.  We hung it on the wall to anchor it in the room and placed a large console beneath it to help hide all of the electronics.  The console was my grandparent's from Ecuador, which was handed down to my parent's and now handed down to us.  My dad was kind enough to have the piece refinished for us as a wedding present.  We couldn't be happier to incorporate something that means so much to our family into our space. One of my future projects in this space will be what to do with this giant TV and how to disguise it, stay tuned to see what I come up with!

We balanced the right side of the room with a bookshelf and on the left we placed a floor lamp from Tony's old apartment.  On the wall next to the bookshelf we hung two old maps of Paris and Rome.  I got these map prints at Ballard Designs several years ago. They are actually meant to be used as wrapping paper but I thought they were beautiful, so I framed them!

Lastly, my favorite piece in the room is a 1930's Victor Radio.  I would love to take credit for this piece but it was Tony who found it.  He bought it several years ago at a local antique shop here in Jacksonville, Florida and had it refinished.  It's amazing that it still works.

That completes our family room!  We love it because we were able to incorporate the new pieces with our existing furniture.  We spend a lot of time in this room and our hope was to create a room that is comfortable without sacrificing style.

Hope you guys enjoyed this post! Stay tuned as there will be many more to come as we continue to work on our home.

Thanks so much for reading!
