6 Simple Ways to Refresh Your Kitchen

Ever since moving into our home, I have wanted to make my kitchen both beautiful and functional. We started by painting our kitchen cabinets a beautiful taupe, which completely changed the look and feel of our space. Something that I struggled with has been styling our kitchen counters to make them look pretty but also functional. After several attempts, I’ve come up with my top six tips that helped me create a kitchen that is not only functional but also beautiful.

Declutter Countertops

Starting with a clean slate is always a good idea whenever you are trying to optimize function and style. As much as I hated taking everything off our counters and making a mess in our dining room, it’s the best way to give your eyes a fresh, clean slate. I find that taking the time to take this step not only allows you to deep clean but, also helps your eye see the space in a new way. When you bring stuff back onto the counters, make it a point to keep the small appliances that you use daily and store the rest. This allows you to create a space that is more visually appealing using the things you love.

Use Decorative Trays

When styling your countertops, I like to use decorative trays or cutting boards to help corral things together. Right next to my stove, I used a wood cutting board and a marble tray to keep my most used kitchen essentials in one place. Not only do the trays help add height, but they also help elevate your everyday items.

Include Artwork

This was the most impactful change I made when decorating my kitchen. I tried to think of the kitchen as any other space in my home and not just include art with a food theme. I made it a point to use art that I would also use in other places in my home. This allows the rooms to flow nicely together and feel more personalized. Also, don’t just hang art on the wall. Lean it against a counter or a shelf to help dress it up and give your space more interest.

Organize Drawers and Cabinets

Having an organized kitchen helps not only keep your kitchen look clean and decluttered but it also helps with your mood. Walking into a space that’s disorganized and cluttered creates a stressful environment. If all your utensils and kitchenware have a place in your kitchen, they won’t have a space in your head. There are several organizational tools to use when organizing your kitchen available and it doesn’t have to be something that you spend a lot of money on. I used a file folder organizer to help me organize all my serving ware. I would choose a cabinet every other week and access what’s inside, declutter if needed, and buy any organizational items, taking it one step at a time will lead to a more organized space and leave you feeling happy.

Add a Lamp

Adding a table lamp to your kitchen not only helps layer in lighting but also helps create a beautiful ambiance. There’s nothing better than turning off your overheads and only keeping your lamps on to help create a cozy space. I recently got this lamp from the Studio McGee Target line and have loved turning it on those early mornings while I make my coffee. A lamp with a textural shade will help bring in texture and the warm light will help soften the room.

Add Flowers and Scents

Making your home smell nice and having flowers on the counter is key to helping you feel comfortable in your space. I like to keep a diffuser or candle in my kitchen to use after cooking. Having fresh or faux flowers can instantly create a welcoming space for you and your family.
