September Home Maintenance Checklist: 10 Tasks to Prepare for Fall & Winter

As the lazy days of summer come to an end, now is the time I turn my focus from lounging poolside to preparing my home for the fall and winter seasons. September is the perfect time to tackle several home tasks to avoid possible costly repairs down the line. It's never fun to do, but with a little planning and forethought, it can really save you from costly repairs down the line.
I've created a September Home Maintenance Checklist to help you along the way:
Inspect and Service Your HVAC System
This is really something that we tackle every 3 months, as living in Florida, you can't really ignore not having a working air conditioning system. But also, as the days start getting a little cooler, it's a perfect time to have an HVAC professional inspect your furnace. They will clean it, check it for potential issues, and ensure it's working efficiently. While you're at it, don't forget to change your filter as well!
Clean Out Your Gutters
Clogged gutters can really wreak havoc in your home. For those of us living along the coast, hurricane season is here, and you really want to have those gutters working properly to prevent any roof leaks. Remove all leaves, twigs, and debris from your gutters and downspouts. If you want to make sure they are really clean, flush them with a hose to make sure water is flowing freely.
Check for Drafts
As the temperatures begin to drop, it's important to make sure you keep warm air in and cold air out. A simple task that can really help control the temperature in your home. Check all windows and doors for any drafts. Adding weatherstripping or caulk where you need to help seal any gaps. Your cooling and heating bill will thank you!
Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors and Wireless Alarm Sensors
Fall is the perfect time to test all your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, as well as your wireless alarm system, if necessary. This is a perfect time to test all of the sensors and replace the batteries for the year. Such a crucial step for the safety and security of your family.
Inspect Your Roof
Before Hurricane season begins in Florida and the cold season begins, we like to head on up to our roof and do a full walkthrough of the roof. We look for loose, cracked, or missing shingles and consult a roofing professional if we find anything troublesome. Better to do this now rather than finding out about an issue later in the season.
Prepare Your Lawn and Garden for Winter
Fall is the perfect time to fertilize your lawn. If you live in a cold climate, this is the perfect time to clean and store away your furniture to protect it from the elements.
Seal Your Driveway
Keeping your driveway in tip-top shape isn't just for curb appeal but also to keep water from getting in and causing further damage. September is the perfect time to clean and seal any cracks.
Reverse Ceiling Fans
We have ceiling fans in almost every room in the house. They aren't the most design-friendly, but a necessity while living in Florida. If you are on the same boat, don't forget to change the direction of your ceiling fans to circulate warm air during the winter months. It will make your space feel warmer while reducing your heating costs. You're welcome!
By tackling these 10 tasks in September, you'll be pretty set up for a comfortable and stress-free fall and winter. Now you get to enjoy the peace of mind that comes with a well-maintained home.
