New Year, New Vision: Our 2026 Home Project Roadmap

There is something so refreshing about the start of a new calendar page, especially when that page leads us into a brand-new year of making this builder-grade house feel a little more like us.
If you’ve been following along on House by the Preserve, you know I’m a firm believer that a home isn’t built overnight. It’s a living, breathing space that evolves with your family. Last year was all about cozy textures and moody traditions, but as we step into 2026, my focus is shifting toward intentional functionality.
I’ve spent the last few months living in our spaces, noticing a few friction points. Places where shoes pile up, where the kitchen feels a bit tired, or where a closet just isn't working as hard as it should because let’s face it, we need all the storage we can get! We don't need a designer's budget to fix these things; we just need a little elbow grease and a solid plan.
Here is a look at the big (and small!) projects we’re tackling this year to bring more beauty and ease to our little house by the preserve.
1. The Heart of the Home: Affordable Kitchen Updates
Our kitchen is the command center, but it’s ready for a refresh. Instead of a full demo, I’m leaning into high-impact, low-cost updates. We’re talking about a fresh coat of cabinet paint in a warm, organic tone, updated hardware that feels more collected than contractor, and perhaps a DIY backsplash that adds character without the hefty price tag. I am still in the exploration stage of what exactly I want to do in this room, but I am super excited and full of ideas!

2. A Fresh Foundation: Whole-House Carpet Updates
It’s finally time! The original carpets have served us well, but I’m ready for a change that feels cleaner and more cohesive. I’m currently sourcing durable, family-friendly options that will withstand the wear and tear of kids and pets while tying every bedroom together for a seamless flow. I appreciate your recommendations, so please leave a message below with your suggestions.
3. Maximum Function: The Great Closet Organization
Is there anything more satisfying than a perfectly organized closet? This year, I’m going beyond just tidying up. We’re getting creative with storage solutions in our primary and hallway closets to ensure every square inch serves a purpose. No more everything drawers, we’re giving everything a home.
4. The Garage Transformation: Mudroom & Workout Space
This might be the project I’m most excited about. Our garage has so much untapped potential! We’rye backpacks and shoes before they hit the kitchen floor. On the opposite corner of the garage, we’re dreaming of setting up a streamlined workout space so I can finally stop moving yoga mats around the living room.
5. Growing Up: Kids' Room Refresh
As the kids get older, their rooms need to grow with them. We’re planning a few updates to make their spaces feel more personalized and big kid-ready. Think whimsical but timeless wallpaper, smarter toy storage, and cozy reading nooks.
I can’t wait to bring you along for the before, the messy middle, and the final reveals. Which of these projects are you most excited to see? Or better yet, what’s on your 2026 home list? Let me know in the comments!
