Board Game Organization: Tips for a Clutter-Free Game Night!
Family game night has become a tradition in our household. We love getting together and spending quality family time playing board games after a long week of school and work. As our collection has grown over the years, if sometimes feels like we’re drowning in boxes of board games. We currently have a whole bookshelf dedicated to just board game storage and we are still bursting at the seams. It was becoming so disorganized that we were losing game pieces and games, creating chaos for our beloved game nights.
The Before
Asses your Collection
Before you begin organizing, it’s important to go over your collection. We’ve been playing board games since my kids were super little and now that they are both of school age, it was time to get pass on some of the games they have outgrown. This will help you asses what you have and allow you to check for any missing pieces.
Categorize and Sort
Once you have a clear view of your collection, it’s time to categorize your games. For our family, I separated our games by genres - card games, dinner games, and family games. I tried to keep it simple since my kids are still on the younger side.
Storage Solutions
Now this is where the fun begins! I knew that if I wanted to maximize my storage solution, I would have to get rid of the board game boxes. They waste a ton of space and are super bulky! There are some great products out there to help you organize your collection. I’ve gathered some of my favorites for you below. I ended up buying a set of mesh pouches in various sizes because I wanted to gain as much space as possible and I felt these would give me the ability to minimize my storage space. They were super affordable too - under $20 for a set of 30!
You could also do this with gallon-sized ziplock bags which I already had some games that I had transferred over previously. The only problem is that after a lot of use, the bags started to tear or break and we kept losing pieces. So I much prefer the mesh pouches over, but for the sake of not creating more waste, I kept the games that were in good condition ziplock bags with plans to switch them over to the mesh bags once they start wearing down.
Board Game Storage Solutions:
I wish I would have remembered to take a picture of the amount of board game boxes I got rid of because believe me when I say that I had a small mountain of boxes after I was done. I used some Dollar Tree baskets to help me corral the games by type and I was able to just use two bottom shelves in a different cabinet in the playroom.
Label, Label, Label
I have found that the key to keeping an organized space is to label everything, especially if you have a family living with you! Everyone will know where to find something and more importantly, where to put it back.
Now our board game collection is ready for the holiday break where I am sure we will take advantage of our family time.
I can’t believe I was able to fit all our board games into just two shelves! It honestly feels so good to have this done and knowing that next time we want to play a game, it won’t lead to frustration trying to find parts. What do you think, would you try this in your home?
