Our little entryway had become the definition of "blah." It was visually boring, lacking any real personality, and felt like a design dilemma I couldn't solve. The more I stared at the space, the more design fatigue set in. Needless to say, I was stuck in a rut. I knew I desperately needed to bring in color and style to the space, but my focus was totally misplaced—I was obsessing over the idea of removing and replacing the existing front door I really disliked.

I was so laser-focused on the expensive solution of swapping out the door that I completely missed the creative, simple ways to address our actual problem: the lack of architectural interest and privacy.

Finding Stylish Front Door Privacy

As I scoured the internet for entryway decor ideas, I stumbled upon a few pictures that completely changed my perspective: curtains on the front door. Initially, it felt counterintuitive, but the more examples I saw (like these from The Wall Street Journal and Rebecca & Genevive), the more I was convinced this was the perfect design hack.

This solution offered everything I wanted. I’ve always been hesitant to commit to wallpaper or a deep paint color in this small space, worried that it would make the room feel dark and cave-like. The beauty of a curtain is that it allows me to bring in that much-needed layer of saturated color and rich texture without sacrificing any natural light. This provides beautiful, stylish front door privacy that still feels airy and welcoming.

The Functional and Decorative Win

After implementing this change and living with it for a few weeks, I can confirm it’s been a spectacular upgrade, both functionally and decoratively.

Functionally, the curtains provide an immediate, adjustable layer of privacy. Decoratively, they add a soft, bespoke quality that completely elevates the entry. What I love most is how effortlessly I can change the entire mood of the space. Swapping out a small curtain for the seasons or the holidays is infinitely easier and cheaper than repainting. I’m already dreaming up a rich velvet option for the upcoming holiday season!
