Dining Room Update: We installed a Mural!

Already February! Wow, that went by fast!

Hope you guys had an amazing weekend. We’re enjoying the cooler weather here in Florida. It’s so nice to step outside without feeling that gush of humidity hit your face!

Today I wanted to show you on a little secret project that I’ve been working on in our dining room. Ever since making over our kitchen last year, the dining room has been feeling a little blah.

Let me show you what the dining room used to look like:

Our home has an open floor plan, where the kitchen, dining room, and family room are all in one big room. I’ve managed to define each space with paint and an area rug in the dining room and one in the family room. The kitchen cabinets got a paint makeover last year and I created a cozy family room area by painting the walls a dark blue. After those updates were complete, the dining room began to feel a little bland and boring.

I didn’t want to introduce another paint color in here since I already had used paint to define the kitchen and family room. So I decided that I would use wallpaper to help me bring some life and interest to this space.

I honestly searched for a long time for a wallpaper that I loved. We have textured walls in our home, so I knew that I couldn’t go the peel and stick route. I had to chose something that I was going to love for years to come. I finally landed on this wall mural from Etsy.

As soon as I saw it, I knew it was the one. The colors are beautiful and go so well with our kitchen. The mural doesn’t overpower the space but also stands out and clearly defines our dining room. Boring no more!

Installing it was not easy but also not as hard as I imagined, if that makes any sense. It was our first time installing wallpaper and I have to say I’m pretty proud of ourselves. This wallpaper is not pre-pasted so we had to roll glue on the wall and then apply the paper to the wall. I purchased this wall papering kit from Amazon to help us apply the paper to the wall. It was super helpful and the seam roller makes such a difference!

It was nerve wrecking and scary and I was a little terrified of ruining the paper. But wow, what a difference!

I’m so happy we took the risk. So happy we watched a million YouTube videos on how to apply wallpaper, lol.

We could not be happier with the result and couldn’t recommend this wallpaper from Wallpapiers Etsy shop enough. The quality is amazing!

Another update that we recently made to the dining is updating the chairs. We previously had the original chairs that came with the dining table (it used to belong to my grandparents). I wanted to modernize the space a little bit by updating the chairs to something a little more modern. I scored these chairs on black Friday last year for a steal and love how the space turned out.

Of course all this led to a new area rug. I searched a long time to find the right area rug for this space because I didn’t want anything competing with the wall paper. This rug from Boutique Rugs did the trick. The colors looks like it was made to go with the wallpaper!

The china cabinet works so well in here because of the straight lines and helps balance out the traditional dining table. You can check this post to see how I took an IKEA cabinet and made it into a china cabinet.

Over in our bar area also got a little bit of an update. The art is just one of my favorite pieces in my home right now. Josh Young and Mel Remmers art help me that modern traditional look I’m going after.

A beautiful white tray to help corral all that bar necessities provide the perfect little moment on this side of the dining room.

I’m super please with how this space is looking and feeling now. I absolutely love walking by and seeing this space feel so much more elegant but yet approachable. We use our dining room every day and I for one, am always looking forward to dinner time.
