With the busy upcoming holiday season and kids being home from school, we know how important it is to plan a few memorable family activities. A cozy movie night is one of our favorite, low-stress ways to make the holiday season special without ever having to leave the house.
As big fans of all things home comfort here at House by the Preserve, we’ve perfected the art of the at-home cozy movie night. Here are our favorite tips for turning a regular evening into a memorable cinematic experience.
Ambiance is Everything
A movie night is about more than just the movie; it's about creating a mood.
Ditch the Overhead Lights: Harsh lighting always ruins the vibe. Use soft, dim light sources like floor lamps with warm bulbs, string lights draped along a shelf, or a few well-placed candles (safely, of course!). A dark room with a warm glow instantly creates that theater-like magic.
Pillows and Throws Galore: This is the perk of at-home movie nights - you can bring as many pillows and blankets as you want to create a cozy spot on the sofa to enjoy the show!
Silence Your Devices: Same rules apply as when you are in a real movie theater. Put your phone on silent and place it in another room. There’s nothing worse than having your movie night interrupted by notification dings and calls from your cell phone.
Elevated Concessions
While the film is the main event, the snacks are the essential side act. Skip the boring chips and choose better treats.
The Perfect Popcorn: Start with a good, fluffy base. Instead of just butter and salt, try mixing things up! We love adding ranch seasoning to our popcorn or even some Frank’s hot sauce if we’re feeling for something spicy.
Bite-Sized Treats: Prepare small bowls of high-quality treats like dark chocolate pretzels, yummy gummy candies, or a custom-made trail mix. Serving them in cute, individual bowls keeps things tidy and feeling special.
The Feature Presentation: Choosing the Right Film
The final piece is the movie itself!
Have a Theme: Does a family favorite always win? Are you in the mood for a throwback '80s comedy? Or perhaps you're seeking a spooky classic. Picking a theme helps narrow down the choices.
The Comfort Watch: Sometimes, you just need a movie you've seen many times. A good old family classic is like a warm hug—it takes no mental energy and always leaves you feeling good.
Prepare Ahead: Don't waste your cozy setup scrolling for an hour trying to decide what to watch! Choose the movie a day or two before movie night so that you can press play right away.
So, dim the lights, fluff the pillows, and get ready for the show. An at-home cozy movie night is the perfect family night in!
TIP: To avoid people walking in front of the image, especially in tight areas, set up your projector for rear projection—behind the screen, facing it.
