Keeping Halloween Simple: Our Playful & Budget-Friendly Front Porch Tour

Thank you for supporting my blog.*Every October, it is so easy to get swept up in the pressure of decorating every single room in the house for Halloween. But this year, I decided to take a much simpler, lower-stress approach: focusing almost entirely on our front porch!
By keeping the spooky cheer outdoors, our interior living spaces stayed calm, clean, and serene, while our front entry became a fun, welcoming, and whimsical wonderland for neighbors, kids, and trick-or-treaters.
The best part? You don't need a huge budget or weeks of installation to make a big impact. With a few affordable finds, smart lighting, and a dose of humor, our porch came together in just one afternoon. Here is how we styled our simple outdoor Halloween display this year!
1. Setting the Mood: Floating Witch Hats & Flickering Sconces
When creating outdoor seasonal impact, looking up is always my favorite place to start. Vertical interest instantly draws the eye and gives the illusion of a full, immersive display.
Floating Witch Hats: I suspended classic black witch hats from the porch ceiling at varying heights using clear fishing line and paperclips. Hanging them at alternating levels creates a magical, floating illusion as they catch the soft autumn breeze.
Flickering Flame Sconces: To elevate the spooky atmosphere after dark, I swapped our standard porch bulbs for flickering flame bulbs in our outdoor sconces. The warm, dancing glow instantly sets a mysterious, cozy tone the moment the sun goes down.
2. High-Impact, Low-Budget Finds: $5 Five Below Treasures
You don't have to spend a fortune on seasonal porch decor to make it look adorable. Some of my absolute favorite pieces this year came from Five Below, proof that budget-friendly decor can still deliver big style!
The Cutest $7 Ghost: Sitting right by our front door to greet guests is the absolute cutest little ghost statue I scored for just $7. It adds a sweet, friendly touch that keeps the porch feeling playful rather than genuinely scary for little ones.
Tiered Black Pumpkins: Next to our ghost, I layered stacked, tiered black pumpkins (also from Five Below!). The matte black finish adds sleek graphic contrast against our exterior entry while anchoring the doorway with classic seasonal shapes.
3. Playful Skeletons & Landscaping Humor
Instead of just standing skeletons upright against the wall, giving them personality and a sense of action makes the display so much more engaging for passersby!
The Crushed Skeleton: In our front garden bed, I arranged a skeleton so it looks like it was accidentally crushed beneath one of our heavy landscaping stones. It gets a laugh from everyone who walks up the driveway!
The Laughing Bush Skeleton: To keep the silly storyline going, I perched another skeleton right on top of our garden bushes, posing it as if it's pointing and laughing at its unluckier friend below.
Skeleton Hands in the Greenery: Tucked inside our existing entryway bushes, I inserted plastic skeleton hands (from Dollar Tree) reaching out through the leaves for a quick, subtle pop of surprise.
4. Column Crash-Landings & Flying Creatures
To finish off the facade, I added dynamic movement across our windows, doors, and architectural columns.
The Crash-Landing Witch: I strapped a full-sized witch figure onto one of our front porch columns, making it look as though she misjudged her broomstick flight and crashed directly into the house. It's an instant conversation starter!
Swarming Bats at the Door: Around the front door frame, I installed a flock of black 3D bats, positioning them so they appear to be swarming toward the handle, trying to get inside.
Crows Across the Window: On our main front window, I mounted black crow cutouts diagonally across the glass to create the illusion of a flock flying right past the house.
The Joy of Simple, Outdoor Decorating
Limiting our Halloween decor to the front porch made the entire process so lighthearted and fun this year. It kept the festive spirit alive where our neighbors and community could enjoy it most, while keeping our indoor routine completely clutter-free.
