There's nothing like waking up in the morning and experiencing the first chilly morning of the season. It's my absolute favorite thing, and I love feeling the change of weather as the seasons change. As the air is getting crisper (well, sort of here in north Florida!), and the leaves are thinking about starting to change - it's officially fall! This is the time of year that I truly love to spend time outdoors and enjoy the crisp, cool weather we finally get. Even if we don't get dramatic fall foliage here, I still love to embrace the cozy vibes and rich colors of fall with a few updates to my garden.
Why a Fall Container Garden?
A container garden is a great way to add a little touch of fall to your home. They are affordable and fairly easy to maintain for the season. Plus, who doesn't love the pop of color they bring to your front porch?! A well-designed fall container can instantly update your curb appeal and create a welcoming space for guest season.
Choosing Your Plants for the Climate
The most important thing to keep in mind when selecting plants for your fall container is to research which plants do well in your climate during the fall season. In Florida, heat and humidity can still be an issue so it's really important to choose plants that can handle those conditions. I love talking to the people working in the Lowe's garden center because they are super knowledgeable and can help guide you in the right direction.
Designing Your Fall Container
Finally, the fun part! It's so much for to finally put it all together. A great tip is to think thriller, filler, spiller!
Thriller is your taller, more upright plant and your focal point.
Filler is the one that will surround your thriller, so it has to be bushier and shorter to fill the container.
Spiller is the plants that will cascade over the edges of the container to add movement and softness.
Planting and Care Tips
Watering: Fall weather can sometimes still be unpredictable so it's important to water your plants when the top 1 inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Try to avoid overwatering which can lead to root rot.
Sunlight: Pay attention to the sunlight requirements of your plants and place the container accordingly. I like to keep mine under the front porch so that the Florida sun doesn't damage the flowers.
Deadheading: This was a step that I usually would skip because I just didn't know any better. But after doing some research, I've started removing any dead or faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
Fertilizing: You may not need to fertilize much in the fall, but a diluted liquid fertilizer once or twice can give your plants a boost.
Now it's time to enjoy your hard work!
Creating a fall container garden is simple, yet impactful way to add a little color and curb appeal to you home. So get creative, have fun, and welcome the fall season into your home!
