DIY Textured Canvas Art

DIY

As you walk through my home, you will notice that most of the paintings in our space are painted by the same person. My Grandmother. She is an incredibly talented painter who has been practicing for years. That means that I am lucky enough to have my pick of some of her best work to decorate my home.

As my Grandmother explored her talents, she created beautiful pieces that I now get to use in my home:

As you can see, her style is very classic and goes well with my traditional style of decorating. Lately, I’ve been interested in updating my decor a little and adding some modern pieces to create a traditional modern feel. I’ve slowly been incorporating modern art pieces along with my Grandmother’s and love how they look together.

My latest piece was inspired by A Glass of Bovino’s one room challenge home office reveal. She’s the queen of mixing traditional style with a little modern twist. I fell in love with a DIY textured canvas art piece she did and just had to give a shot. Be sure to read her post on how she created hers. I made my piece with materials I already had on hand, so it’s a little different.

Materials:

  1. Canvas Art Paper

  2. 3M Wall Repair Compound

  3. Spatula

  4. Frame + Matting

Steps:

  1. I had an old painting that I had made years ago on canvas art paper and an old frame with black matting that was sitting in my attic. I started by spray painting the frame black.

  2. While I let the first coat of the frame dry, I started mixing my 3M Wall Repair compound with a little water. I wanted the consistency to be a little bit thicker than pancake batter to allow me to create that textured look I was going for while also spreading easily on the canvas paper.

  3. Once I had the wall repair compound at the right consistency, I started spreading it on the canvas paper. No real plan on the art aspect yet, I was mostly just concerned about covering the paper in a thin layer first.

  4. Once the canvas paper is covered in a thin layer it is time to start adding some texture. You can go as light or as heavy as you would like. There’s no right or wrong way, it’s just your own personal preference and what you like. Once I was happy with my texture, I let it dry for a few hours to make sure everything was dry. You may notice that as the paper dries, it will start to curl at the edges. I wasn’t too concerned about this because of how I was going to put it back on my frame (see step 5). If you don’t like the frame and matting look, you could always use the same technique but on an actual framed canvas.

  5. My frame had a glass piece in front of the painting that I did not want to use, so I just simply put my matting in first, then my textured art piece, and then the glass so that it helped keep the art piece nice and flat on the frame.

I just love the way the textured art piece looks layered with another painting on top. It definitely helped update our master bedroom to a more modern look.

What do you think? Are you a textured art fan?

Ever since I was a little girl I have been fascinated with interior decorating and using my hands to create beautiful things to incorporate in my space.

I believe that making your house a home shouldn’t be a difficult or expensive but exciting and most of all fun! It isn’t about the size or location of your home but about being able to create a space that is yours to fit your budget without sacrificing style.

Having recently purchased our first home, we’ve been busy creating a space that is ours as we blend my and my husband’s styles together. Explore the site to see what we have accomplished!
