Dining Room: Hiding an Unwanted Window
Our dining room has always been a space that I've struggled to decorate because of the different height walls and window placement. Over the years, I've tried different floor plans and decorating styles to make this space feel like it belongs with the rest of our home.
Below are some before pictures of what the dining room has looked liked over the years:
I always felt like the window that faces into our playroom as a problem because the view distracted from the dining room, like it was a pass through rather than it's own space. So one day, I decided to explore the idea of trying to hide it. Hiding it seemed like the best step forward so that we could try it before we decided on something more permanent, like removing the window completely.
I started with a console table that used to live in our family room and painted it "Urbane Bronze" from Sherwin Williams. The color helps tie in the family room space into the dining room as it's the same color as the walls. Next, I added the biggest mirror we already owned and hung it in front of the window. Unfortunately, the mirror was not long enough to cover the entire window, so I was going to have to get creative to cover the bottom.
Creating balance with a tall lamp was key to help fill out the large wall. On the other side of the mirror, I decided to add a small gallery wall. Gallery walls are great when you need to fill a large space but don't have one large piece.
Decorating the console table was going to be key so that I could finally cover the bottom of the window. I decided to carry the look of the of the gallery wall and use family pictures to cover most of the bottom. Adding books with a pretty bowl to hide the rest worked perfectly.
After living with this set up for a couple of weeks, I have to say that we don't miss the hidden window at all. We still get plenty of natural light from the other window and the mirror helps bounce the light around the room. I'm definitely glad that we tried this out first and now have added removing this window to our list of future house projects.
