From Chaos to Cozy: Your Intentional Hosting Checklist for Overnight Guests

Opening your home to guests is a very intimate act. It’s not only an invitation into your space, but into your inner sanctum. In this fast-paced world that prizes constant productivity, the arrival of a loved one forces us to slow down, put our phones away, and focus on our friends and family.

But let’s be honest: before that beautiful moment, there can be a lot of chaos. There’s frantic cleaning and organizing, and the sudden need to redecorate everything!

I believe in intentional hosting - with the goal never being perfection but grace. It’s about creating a feeling of welcome, making sure your guests are cared for, well-rested, and truly feel at home.

We will be focusing on intentional moments of care to help create a graceful home. Without a checklist in sight, we’re creating the feeling of being welcomed. Settle in and grab your favorite warm drink, and let’s explore the small, thoughtful acts-from adjusting lighting to preparing a cozy sleeping space-that will make your guests truly feel welcomed.

A dark wood antique console table sits in a brightly lit hallway with beige tile, adorned with framed paintings, candles, and a vase of greenery, with a dog lying on a rug visible through an archway.

First Impressions

Forget appearances; the true first impression is made by how welcome you make your guest feel. Focusing on shared spaces, ensuring a sensory welcome is effortless and graceful.

A cozy living room features dark gray walls, a flat-screen TV mounted above a black console table flanked by two ornate wall sconces and two plaid armchairs, and a large display cabinet filled with books and collectibles.

Clearing Visual Noise

Put the frantic dusting and mopping out of your mind for right now, and let’s practice removing your visual noise. Flat surfaces - the kitchen island, coffee table, dining console, anywhere where clutter likes to rest. By taking care of these high-visual-clutter areas first will help reduce visual stress in your surroundings. Dedicate just 15 minutes a day to reducing your clutter and return every item back to its proper home.

Scent and Sound

This is where we start to create the ambiance that you truly want to portray. First, let’s open up our windows and refresh our indoor air. Next, introduce a gentle scent - nothing overwhelming, but something simple and light like a pure scented candle or a quiet diffuser with notes like cedarwood, white tea, or warm linen. Now that you’ve got your favorite scent going, it’s time to pay attention to sound. Play something that makes you feel calm - I usually like to pick something instrumental - and keep the volume low, so that it encourages easy conversation and discourages digital distractions.

A traditional kitchen features off-white cabinets, granite countertops, a stainless steel refrigerator, black wooden barstools lining a peninsula, and a small, wood-toned movable island styled with candles and dishes.

The Guest Sleep Space

No matter the size of your guest room, there are a few tricks to make it feel welcoming and inviting - a restorative retreat for your guest. Creating a space that they feel comfortable in to relax and restore after a long day of travel is the goal.

A cozy bedroom features light blue-green walls, a white daybed with a dusty rose quilted coverlet and blue throw pillows, and two long shelves above the bed displaying a collection of books and framed art.

A Luxurious Foundation

Start with the bed - a good mattress with soft cotton sheets, a lightweight blanket, and a duvet. Ensure you have comfortable, plush pillows available.

Comfort Items

Providing the comforts of home, but elevated:) I like to have a carafe filled with water on the bedside table, along with a cell phone charger, so that they can charge all their electronics. Finally, leaving the TV remote and a book that I think they would enjoy, all laid out neatly, is the finishing touch. These small, thoughtful gestures transform a guest's stay into a relaxing, personalized experience, ensuring anyone who visits feels not just welcome, but truly cared for.

The Final Touches

The Bathroom

Treat the guest bathroom as a temporary spa. Beyond cleaning it, place a fresh, folded stack of large, plush towels. Think about the things someone may forget when traveling-a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss- and have these items available for their use.

Wi-Fi Password

In this digital age, connectivity is an essential part of comfort. Write down your Wi-Fi network name and password on a simple, but pretty card and leave it on the nightstand.

Remember that hospitality is not about performing, but about creating a connection with your guests. It’s not about things being perfect, but about spending time with those you love and creating beautiful memories that you will cherish for years to come.

A view through an open doorway into a light blue-green bedroom shows a white bed with a burgundy quilted coverlet, light-colored curtains, and a dark side table with a vase of flowers in the foreground.

Ultimately, this is the true spirit of intentional hosting, every small detail, from the calming scent to the plush towels - they all scream “Welcome, I’m glad you’re here!”
