The 2026 Anti-Trend Report: Why I’m Choosing Timeless Over Trendy

Every January, without fail, as soon as the last bit of holiday decor is put away, the internet explodes with lists telling us what’s “in" and what’s "out." Suddenly, the rooms we loved in December start to feel…well, a little dated.
But if the last decade of decorating has taught me anything, it’s that chasing trends is the fastest way to make a home feel dated before the paint even dries. I had to learn this lesson the hard way. When we first moved in ten years ago, I felt the pull to update every single wall to gray, simply because that’s what was “in” at the time. I didn’t stop to consider the other finishes in our home or how it actually made me feel. By the time I finished the very last wall, I knew I’d made a major mistake.
In our builder-grade home, every dollar and every DIY hour has to count. I’ve realized now that when we decorate for a viral aesthetic, we aren’t truly building a home; we’re just playing with a trend that isn't meant to age well.
Your home shouldn't be a timestamp of a specific year's trends. It should be a library of your life, filled with pieces that were chosen because they bring you joy, not because they went viral.
In 2026, I’m opting out. Here is the House by the Preserve Anti-Trend Report, the things I’m skipping this year, and the timeless foundations I’m leaning into instead.
1. Skipping the Blob Furniture
You’ve seen them: the "fat" sofas and blob-like chairs that look like they belong in a futuristic marshmallow factory. While they look cool in a high-end gallery, they often lack the structure and soul a traditional home needs.
What I’m doing instead: I’m sticking with traditional silhouettes. Think turned wood legs, English roll arms, and spindle details. These pieces have visual legs; they allow you to see the floor, making our standard-sized rooms feel airier and more intentional.
2. Opting Out of Perfect Minimalism
There was a time when I thought a clean home meant hidden everything. But a home with no visible life feels sterile.
What I’m doing instead: I’m embracing the un-kitchen and the lived-in library. I want to see the copper pots hanging. I want the stacks of books (minus the dust jackets, of course) on the coffee table. I’m trading minimalism for curated function. If we use it every day, let’s make it beautiful and leave it out.
3. Replacing the Chaos Mirror with History
The trend of irregular, jagged, or melting mirrors is everywhere for 2026. They are fun, sure, but they have a very short shelf life before they feel like a timestamp of “that one year."
What I’m doing instead: I’m hunting for Gold, antiqued mirrors, and dark wood mirrors. Give me a heavy, ornate vintage mirror with a bit of patina any day. It adds an architectural element to a plain drywall room that a trendy mirror just can't provide.
The Preserve Filter: A 5-Year Rule
Before I click add to cart on a new find this month, I’m asking myself one question: "Will I still want to dust this in 2031?"
If the answer is "I'm not sure," it stays at the store. We are building a home that feels collected over decades, not purchased in one weekend. We’re looking for unlacquered brass that will tarnish, silver that can be polished, linen that will soften, and wood that will tell a story. The goal is to create a home YOU love, so if you love something that is currently trending, go for it!
But do it because it speaks to you, not because an algorithm told you it was cool. Trends should be the seasoning, not the main course. When we stop decorating for the likes and start decorating for the life we actually lead within these four walls, that’s when a house finally starts to feel like a home. Let’s make 2026 the year we stop chasing what’s next and start cherishing what’s timeless.
