The Most Impactful Home Improvements for a Builder Grade House

Buying a builder grade house can sometimes feel overwhelming. Usually there's a lack of color, interest, and quality and it can be hard to know where to start to make your house into your own. I know that when we first moved into our own builder grade house, I had a hard time knowing where to start. After living in our home for 5+ years, I can without hesitation name the projects that had a major impact in our home.

Update Lighting

Updating your light fixtures is one of the most impactful ways to update your home. Lighting is considered the jewelry of the home for a reason! It can instantly change the look and feel of your space. When we first bought our home, the inside looked exactly the same as all the other homes in our neighborhood. Once we started updating the lighting, our home started to feel more ours.

Paint

The power of paint is real! Seriously you guys, there's nothing more impactful that's easier or cheaper than updating your space with paint. We recently updated our primary bedroom with just paint and it is so crazy to see the difference. Our furniture feels updated and new, the space feels fresh and we only spent $45 on a gallon of paint! It's not just limited to walls, think kitchen cabinets, trim, doors, furniture.

Window Treatments

If lighting is considered the jewelry of a room, then window treatments should be the dress. If done correctly, they can instantly dress up a space with color and texture. Window treatments doesn't always mean curtains, it can be a fun awning in a nursery, or a roman shade that lets in the perfect amount of light. Window treatments can be combined with others to create a layered look. Just as choosing the right dress is essential to knowing where you are going, it's essential to pay attention to how the room is going to be used in order to choose the appropriate window dressings. In the living room you may opt for something that lets more light in while in the bedroom you may want to opt for a blackout feature. The possibilities are endless!

Swap out Hardware

One of the easiest updates that you can do to make your builder grade house more your style is by updating hardware. Whether in the kitchen or bathrooms, selecting cabinet hardware that better suits you and your family will instantly update a space. You can also dress up doors by swapping out door handles to something more modern.

Organize and Declutter

Living in a home where we just don’t have a lot of room to store a lot of stuff, I've had to train myself to constantly declutter things out of our home that we have either outgrown or no longer use. It makes our home feel a whole lot bigger and a whole lot more functional when everything has a place.

Update Bathroom Mirrors

Perhaps one of the easiest yet most satisfying updates to do in a builder grade home is to swap out those builder grade mirrors in the bathrooms and add a mirror that's more your style. The mirror swap can instantly take a bathroom from bland to wow!
